CHANGES TO ADULT BASIC EDUCATION ANNOUNCED

Released on February 24, 1995

Education, Training and Employment Minister Pat Atkinson today
announced changes to Adult Basic Education (ABE).

People taking Grade 12 through adult upgrading will now receive a
diploma that is equal to a regular high school Grade 12 diploma. This
diploma will be accepted as entrance to technical schools, regional
colleges, and Saskatchewan's two universities.

"We've given ABE equal standing in our educational system," Atkinson
said. "ABE students will be able to access post-secondary education
more easily."

The new adult Grade 12 program will replace the former adult Grades 11
and 12. Students will take Grade 12 subjects including English,
mathematics, science, social studies and two electives.

"The ABE program has been standardized for everyone's benefit.
Students will save time, the system will have more flexibility, and
instructors will have better access to ongoing developments in
curriculum, training, evaluation, distance education, and
computer-assisted learning."
