EDUCATION CAPITAL BUDGET WILL CREATE JOBS

Released on February 9, 1995

Education, Training and Employment Minister Pat Atkinson today
announced $18 million for capital projects in the education system.
School divisions will receive $11 million for various projects while $7
million will be directed to post-secondary education.

The $11 million means that school divisions will contribute an
additional $5.2 million as their share.

"Working together with our partners means that a total of $23.2 million
will be available for capital projects," Atkinson said. "The
construction activity will generate about 374 full time jobs for
architects, contractors, suppliers, and tradespeople over the next two
years.

"At the same time we will be providing safe, well-equipped schools for
Saskatchewan students."

The department will give special attention to health and safety issues
requiring renovations and repairs, and to re-equipping high schools.
In addition, some joint-use projects supported by regional college and
school division boards will take priority.
Projects are: T.D. Michel School, Big River; Shaunavon High School;
R.J. Humphrey School, Kinistino; Esterhazy Central High School; Consul
School; William Grayson School, Moose Jaw; Pleasantdale School,
Estevan; Davidson Elementary School; Tisdale Comprehensive High School
and Cumberland Regional College; William Mason School, Choiceland;
North Battleford Comprehensive High School and North West Regional
College; University of Regina; University of Saskatchewan; and, SIAST
institutes.

The projects will be undertaken beginning in the summer of 1995,
pending further discussions with individual school divisions.
