1995 QUEEN'S COUNSEL APPOINTMENTS

Released on December 22, 1995

Justice Minister John Nilson today announced the 1995 Saskatchewan
Queen's Counsel (QC) appointments.

Queen's Counsel is an honourary designation. The 1995 appointments
recommended by the minister are:

Mark Brayford of Saskatoon, a lawyer with the Brayford-Shapiro Law
Office; Brayford was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1979;

Maurice Laprairie of Regina, a lawyer with the MacPherson Leslie &
Tyerman law firm; Laprairie was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar
in 1977;

Anthony Merchant of Regina, a lawyer with the Merchant Law Group;
Merchant was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1968;

Douglas Moen, Executive Director of the Public Law and Policy
Division of Saskatchewan Justice; Moen was admitted to the
Saskatchewan bar in 1980;

Michael Ryan of Regina, Director of the Regina office of the
Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission; Ryan was admitted to the
Saskatchewan bar in 1968;

Noel Sandomirsky of Regina, a lawyer with the Hleck Kanuka
Thuringer law firm; Sandomirsky was admitted to the Saskatchewan
bar in 1968;

Barry Singer of Saskatoon, a lawyer with the Hnatyshyn Singer
Thorstad law firm; Singer was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in
1975;

Thomas Waller of Regina, a lawyer with the Olive Waller Zinkhan &
Waller law firm; Waller was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in
1973;

Sheila Whelan of Saskatoon, a lawyer with the Jamieson Bains law
firm; Whelan was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1979; and,

Merri-Ellen Wright of Saskatoon, a lawyer with the McDougall Ready
law firm; Wright was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1982.

In addition, Justice Minister John Nilson received his QC designation.
Consistent with past practice and tradition, certain Queen's Counsel
appointments are viewed as automatic, including the appointment of
people holding the offices of: Minister of Justice, Deputy Minister of
Justice, Dean of the Law School at the University of Saskatchewan and
President of the Law Society of Saskatchewan.

Nilson, admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1979, was a lawyer with the
firm MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman prior to being appointed Justice
Minister in November, 1995.

Individuals receiving the QC designation have been recommended as
deserving of appointment by a QC selection committee, comprised of the
Saskatchewan Minister of Justice, the Chief Justice of the Court of
Appeal for Saskatchewan and the past presidents of the Law Society of
Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Branch of the Canadian Bar
Association.

Appointees must be residents of Saskatchewan and have a minimum of ten
years entitlement to practice law in the superior courts of any
province or territory or the United Kingdom and Ireland.
