Minister Lorne Scott, today announced the federal and Saskatchewan
governments have awarded participant funding to help individuals and
groups participate in the joint environmental assessment review of the
uranium mining developments in Northern Saskatchewan.
Recipients are the English River First Nation, the Hatchet Lake Indian
Band, the Kikinahk Friendship Centre, La Ronge/Air Ronge Community
Development Corporation, Meadow Lake Tribal Council and the Federation
of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, the Prince Albert Grand Council
Management Company Limited, the Saskatchewan Uranium Coalition, the
Northern Village of Buffalo Narrows, Maisie Shiell, and Patricia
Thomas.
The assistance, totalling $75,000 will be provided under the
Participant Funding Program administered in conjunction with the
federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process (EARP). The
funding will help recipients to review the McArthur River Environmental
Impact Statement and participate in the public hearings.
While the Environmental Assessment and Review Process (EARP) has been
replaced by a new process under the Canadian Environmental Assessment
Act, this review will continue under the EARP until its completion.
The funding administration committee, appointed to review participant
funding proposals, recommended the level of funding for the recipients.
The recommendations were then approved by the President of the Canadian
Environmental Assessment Agency, Michel Dorais, and the Deputy Minister
of Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management, Michael Shaw.
Members of the committee included: Fred Heal, Executive Director,
Meewasin Valley Authority; James Irvine, Associate Professor,
Department of Family Medicine, University of Saskatchewan; Anne
Hryniuk, member of the business community in La Ronge; Donna Kellsey,
Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management; and John McEwen,
Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.
