INTERNET ACCESS APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT FUND PROJECTS APPROVED

Released on December 7, 1995

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Ralph Goodale and Saskatchewan
Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter today announced that
28 projects have been approved under the Internet Access Application
Development Fund, a project funded through the Canada-Saskatchewan
Infrastructure Program.

The approved projects cover a wide range of initiatives, including a
health education centre, corporate home pages, an electronic tourism
guide and an index for First Nations materials.

Speaking on behalf of Lloyd Axworthy, minister of Western Economic
Diversification and implementing minister of the infrastructure program
in Western Canada, Goodale said: "I'm pleased to see a
cross-representation of Saskatchewan companies, municipalities and
universities participating in this project. There is also a
representation of both rural and urban projects and priorities, which
gives people throughout Saskatchewan a competitive advantage. By
upgrading its electronics infrastructure, Saskatchewan will be
well-positioned to enter the 21st century."

"These projects will give Saskatchewan people the skills to remain in
the forefront of information technology, and allow us to take advantage
of the new economic opportunities being provided under SaskTel's
Internet Access Initiative," Lingenfelter said.

"The initiative is another example of how Saskatchewan is developing
information technology, one of the six strategic sectors of the
provincial economy targeted for growth in our economic development
strategy, Partnership for Renewal."

Funding for the Internet Access Application Development Fund was
announced in October, 1994, under the Canada-Saskatchewan
Infrastructure Works Program, with the fund administered by
Saskatchewan Economic Development.

The funding was supplied to encourage Saskatchewan businesses and
organizations to develop information products and services that would
be available to the general public via the SaskTel Internet Access
Initiative.

The Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Agreement was signed in
January, 1994. The agreement enables Canada, Saskatchewan and
municipalities to co-operatively undertake and fund projects which will
renew and improve the quality of the public infrastructure and create
employment opportunities for Canadians.

To date, more than $228 million has been approved for 1,030
infrastructure projects in Saskatchewan.

Federal funding for the Infrastructure Works Program was provided for
in the February budget as part of the federal government's priorized
spending program.
