INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM APPROVES FUNDING FOR 164 PROJECTS

Released on December 1, 1995

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Ralph Goodale and Saskatchewan
Intergovernmental Relations Minister Ned Shillington today announced
the approval of 164 municipal and intermunicipal projects under the
Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program.

The infrastructure projects announced today have a total value of
$11,432,494, and will be funded by the three levels of government.
These projects are expected to create 191 jobs over the next two years
during the planning and construction phases.

The projects include street and sidewalk construction and upgrading,
water and sewer system upgrading, improvements to community
recreational facilities, new municipal buildings, renovations and
improvements to existing municipal buildings, and a host of other
projects that will improve the municipal infrastructure in Saskatchewan
communities.

Speaking on behalf of Lloyd Axworthy, minister of Western Economic
Diversification and implementing minister of the infrastructure program
in Western Canada, Goodale said: "Through co-operation between the
three levels of government these communities are able to start working
on worthwhile infrastructure projects that have been identified as
local priorities. While maintaining and improving local
infrastructure, these projects also improve the quality of life and
increase local employment opportunities."

"The infrastructure program is a positive contributor to the future of
our communities and our province," Shillington said. "The projects
announced today will create jobs, stimulate the local economy and
strengthen public infrastructure in Saskatchewan communities."

Of the 164 projects announced today, 46 are intermunicipal.
Intermunicipal projects represent a co-operative effort by two or more
rural municipalities, cities, towns or villages on projects which will
benefit more than one Saskatchewan community.

The Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Agreement was signed in
January, 1994. The agreement enables Canada, Saskatchewan, and
municipalities to co-operatively undertake and fund projects which will
renew and improve the quality of the public infrastructure and create
employment opportunities for Canadians.

To date, a total of more than $228 million has been approved for 1,030
infrastructure projects in Saskatchewan.

Federal funding for the Infrastructure Works Program was provided for
in the February, 1994, budget as part of the federal government's
prioritized spending program.
