Agriculture and Food Minister Andy Renaud said today that Manitoba cropadjusters have been enlisted to help Saskatchewan adjusters process the
large number of recent hail damage claims in the province.
"Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) reports that hail
claims have risen dramatically in the last three weeks," Renaud said.
"The assistance provided by the additional adjusters from Manitoba will
help the corporation to process claims as quickly as possible."
Renaud said the corporation estimates it will receive 3,000 claims from
the devastating storms which ripped through Saskatchewan on August 26
and 27. Last year, 15,659 hail claims were registered with SCIC with
approximately $41 million paid out. To date, the corporation has
received nearly 13,500 claims, with more coming in daily.
Collin Liebrecht, SCIC's hail and grain grading manager, said the extra
resources from Manitoba will ensure timely adjusting on such a large
volume of claims.
"In the last month, the corporation registered more than 10,000 claims
and that translates into a lot of work for adjusting staff out in the
field," Liebrecht said. "We have already moved some of our own
adjusters around the province to areas where they are needed most.
"The Manitoba assistance illustrates the co-operative nature of crop
insurance programs on the prairies."
In 1993, SCIC sent 40 adjusters to help Manitoba with a heavy load of
claims because of flooded crops.
"We can assure our customers we are doing everything in our power to
get out into the fields and assess hail damage. We appreciate their
patience and understanding during this hectic time," Liebrecht said.
The first group of adjusters from Manitoba arrived this week and will
be assisting customer service offices in the hardest hit areas. The
Manitoba adjusters are expected to stay until the majority of the
damaged fields in southern Saskatchewan are inspected and assessed.
