FUNDING FOR PUBLIC PARTICIPATION REVIEW OF URANIUM MINING DEVELOPMENTS

Released on April 12, 1995

The federal and provincial governments have provided funding to help
individuals and groups participate in the environmental assessment
review of uranium mining developments in Northern Saskatchewan. Deputy
Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment Sheila Copps and
Environment and Resource Management Minister Berny Wiens today
announced recipients of the funds.

Recipients include: the Canadian Nuclear Society, Saskatchewan Branch;
the English River First Nation; the Interchurch Uranium Committee; the
Inuit Tapirisat of Canada; the Joint Uranium Review Committee; the
Kikinahk Friendship Centre; the La Ronge-Air Ronge Community
Development Corporation; the Meadow Lake Tribal Council; the North West
Saskatchewan Municipalities Association; the Nuclear Workers' Council;
the Saskatchewan Environmental Society; the Saskatchewan Risk
Assessment Society; Maisie Shiell; Jiri (George) Stmad; and, Patricia
Thomas.

The assistance, totalling $144,700, will be provided under the
Participant Funding Program administered in conjunction with the
federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process (EARP). The
funding will help recipients to review the Cigar Lake and Midwest Joint
Venture Environmental Impact Statements and participate in public
hearings.

While the EARP has been replaced by a new process under The Canadian
Environmental Assessment Act, this review will continue under the EARP
until its completion.

The funding administration committee, appointed to review participant
funding proposals, recommended the level of funding for the recipients.
The recommendations were then approved by the president of the Canadian
Environmental Assessment Agency Michel Dorais and the Deputy Minister
of Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management Michael Shaw.

Members of the committee were: Fred Heal, executive director, Meewasin
Valley Authority; James Irvine, associate professor, Department of
Family Medicine, University of Saskatchewan; Anne Hryniuk, member of
the business community in La Ronge; Donna Kellsey, Saskatchewan
Environment and Resource Management; and, Jaye Shuttleworth, Canadian
Environmental Assessment Agency.
