1. Municipal Administrators’ Corner – Municipal Career Spotlight

Are there high school students in your community who may be interested in learning more about a career in municipal government? Do you want to showcase the work of your municipality and educate the youth in your community about local governance? Hosting a Municipal Career Spotlight may be your answer.

The purpose of a Municipal Career Spotlight is to engage, educate and promote interest in municipal careers to high school students in your community. Often, communities/schools will host career days for students to learn about different jobs and what they need to study to get those jobs.

The Municipal Career Spotlight Guide is available to assist administrators and elected officials in hosting their own Municipal Career Spotlight. The guide has tips to help plan your own career day to showcase municipal careers such as an administrator, public works staff, recreation staff, planning and development staff, etc.

The guide contains activities that will appeal to students such as a classroom learning session, hosting a mock council meeting and touring municipal facilities. You can customize the poster template, student handouts and other materials to suit your own circumstances.

The classroom learning session involves a PowerPoint presentation. It can be downloaded as a separate document so that you can customize it to suit your own community. The slides explain the different types of municipalities, their responsibilities to their citizens and career paths students can consider.
