Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Contracts

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) play a vital role in the Saskatchewan health care system and provide quality care in Saskatchewan communities. NPs are licensed to practise in Saskatchewan and are regulated by the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS). As primary care providers, NPs can provide many of the same services as family physicians. Working with family physicians and other health-care providers as part of a collaborative team, NPs help to create capacity and enhance access and services for patients.

In Summer 2025, the Government of Saskatchewan launched the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Contracts as a new model for NPs to deliver publicly funded primary care.

The purpose of the Primary Care NP contract is to:

  • allow NPs to practise autonomously to their full scope of practice;
  • promote collaborative, team-based care; and
  • increase access to comprehensive primary care services.

1. Eligibility

In order for NPs to be eligible to work under contract with the Ministry of Health, they must meet the following requirements:

  • The NP must be registered as an NP in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS) with no conditions on their license. The NP will conduct their practice consistent with the conditions of such registration.
  • The NP will provide longitudinal, full-scope primary health care services.
  • The NP must commit to act as the regular and most responsible primary care provider for a minimum 800 patient panel that is balanced in composition (e.g., age, complexity).
  • The NP must agree to meet the service obligations/program requirements outlined in the Program Guide.

Further consideration given to:

  • A willingness to provide after-hours access on weekends, evenings or holidays
  • Applications that reflect team-based care/group practice
