Range Plan Development

Engaging with First Nations and Métis communities and stakeholders through a planning table process is key to developing range plans. Range plans guide how to better manage caribou habitat through:

  • Avoiding specified activities during critical periods or in sensitive areas;
  • Reclaiming and restoring damaged habitat;
  • Mitigating disturbance impacts by compensating with offsets (carrying out reclamation and restoration in
    necessary areas);
  • Improving forest management practices by applying natural forest pattern harvesting; and
  • Managing road, trail and other access to help restore habitat and minimize habitat loss and degradation.

As of 2024, range plans for the SK2 Central and SK2 West caribou administrative units are developed and finalized. The draft SK2 East caribou range plan is under review. The SK1 range planning process began with the first planning table in December 2023. Completed range plans will be reviewed and revised periodically.
