Government issues pesticide licences to commercial pesticide applicators, application businesses and retail vendors through the Pesticide Licensing Program. The Licensing Program supports the safe handling, storage and application of pest control products as required by The Pest Control Products (Saskatchewan) Act.
Types of commercial licences under the Pesticide Licensing Program:
- Pesticide Applicator Licence - Any person wanting to purchase and use federally registered restricted or commercial class pesticides for hire or reward are required to hold a Pesticide Applicator Licence.
- Pesticide Service Licence - Companies or individuals that conduct pesticide applications as part of their business for hire or reward are required to hold a Pesticide Service Licence.
- Pesticide Vendor Licence - Retail pesticide vendors that sell Commercial or Restricted class pesticides are required to hold a Pesticide Vendor.
Pesticide Applicator License is $50 annually or $250 for five years. A five year licence is available for new applicators or following renewal of training.
Pesticide use in Saskatchewan is regulated federally, through The Pest Control Products Act, and provincially, through The Pest Control Products (Saskatchewan) Act and Regulations.
Under the provincial Act and Regulations, commercial and restricted class herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and vertebrate pest control products are regulated. Home and garden pesticides are classified as domestic pesticides and are exempt from the Act.
In 2015 the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture introduced several regulatory amendments to The Pest Control Products Regulations. The changes modernize the regulations to reflect current industry practices, enhance the protection of the environment and harmonize our regulations with other provincial jurisdictions and federal regulations. These changes were made following an extensive consultation with stakeholders, partners and clients. The amendments recognize emerging trends in pest control product registration, and better meet industry needs and expectations.
