Selling Grain to the United States

In preparation for exporting grain to the U.S. producers are advised to:

  1. Understand the rules regulating grain trade between Canada and the U.S. (See Exporting Grain, Oilseeds and Special Crops to the United States document for more information.)
  2. Find a U.S. buyer. (See the U.S. Grain Dealers Licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission in North Dakota and Montana document for more information.)
  3. Decide if you are going to truck your commodity yourself; otherwise you will need access to a licensed transport company.
  4. Consider using a custom broker to facilitate and streamline the paperwork necessary to get your grain across. (See the Licensed Custom Brokers document for more information.)
  5. Consider working with a licensed grain broker. Some Saskatchewan grain brokers already do business in the U.S. Working with a licensed grain broker may be an easy way to get your grain to potential U.S. buyers. (see the Saskatchewan Grain Brokers Involved in Exporting Grain to the U.S. document for more information.)
