Celebrating National Volunteer Week 2026

The Government of Saskatchewan, Sask Sport, SaskCulture and the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association is recognizing our province's volunteers for the incredible contributions they make to our quality of life.  

Across Canada, National Volunteer Week is being celebrated from April 19 to 25.

"Volunteers are really the heartbeat of our communities," Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Alana Ross said. "We know the amazing talents these individuals have and that each contribution, big or small, has the power to influence and inspire positive change. On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, we would like to thank those people who make such a steadfast commitment to their communities and make life better in our province."

This year's national theme of Ignite Volunteerism celebrates the power of civic participation, rebuilding volunteer infrastructure, and recognizing the vital role volunteers play in building resilient, inclusive communities.  

Saskatchewan is home to more than 330,000 residents who volunteer in their communities.  In the sport, culture and recreation world, we know them as coaches, instructors, leaders, board members, event planners, teachers, officials, caretakers and so much more.

Arts councils are part of a network of community organizers that connect with the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils to access professional artists, receive support in running quality exhibitions and performances, and access other professional development opportunities. 2026 Saskatchewan Winter Games Host Organizing Committee co-chairs Davin Hildebrandt, Dwight King and Regan Beck sitting at the front table addressing committee members. History was made as the Games marked the first time two communities, the City of Meadow Lake and Flying Dust First Nation, had come together to host the event. Nearly 600 individuals from the two communities donated their time planning the event and taking care of the day-to-day activities during the Games. These hard-working and humble individuals come from diverse backgrounds, motivated by the simple desire to make our communities better.

One major source for volunteer opportunities is through the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation, which provides more than 1,200 organizations and communities with direct funding.  

In turn, this funding reaches approximately 12,000 beneficiary groups and more than 600,000 participants across the province each year.  

Volunteers help make the thousands of community events and activities held by these organizations each year successful.
