Students Visit Legislative Assembly

The Provincial Capital Commission welcomed more than 40 students, teachers and chaperones to the Legislative Building as a part of the semi-annual program, A Day in the Legislative Assembly.

“This unique program is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about our system of government and how that affects them in their daily lives,” Minister Responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Ken Cheveldayoff said.  “I hope that by attending A Day in the Legislative Assembly the students have learned about Saskatchewan’s democracy and are inspired to get involved in the democratic process.”

Students from Beechy School, Eaton School and Kyle Composite School had a VIP tour of the Legislative Building, after being introduced in the House and witnessing Question Period.  The students also took part in a panel discussion led by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Mark Docherty in the Chamber.

During this unique panel event, students had the chance to sit in Members’ seats, learn about roles and responsibilities of elected officials and ask questions of MLA for Kindersley Ken Francis, MLA for Regina Douglas Park Nicole Sarauer, and Clerk of the Legislative Assembly Greg Putz.  The students also met with their local representatives, the MLAs for Kindersley Ken Francis and Rosetown-Elrose Jim Reiter.

“This wonderful program is a great way for our students to see the practical application and importance of what we teach in Grade 8 Social Studies,” Beechy School teacher Brianne Denning said.  “The opportunity to tour the building, witness Question Period and interact with important members of the Legislative Assembly is truly special and is not an experience our students will soon forget.”

A Day in the Legislative Assembly was created in 2012 as part of the 100th Anniversary of the Legislative Building, and will be hosted again in the spring of 2019.
