Credit Reports Key for Financial Health

Released on March 31, 2017

Accurate credit reports are vital for the long-term financial health of Canadians.  Inaccurate or incomplete information on a person’s credit report could affect them financially for years.  Serious negative consequences could include the inability to buy a home or vehicle.

The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) regulates credit reporting agencies.  It’s important consumers know their rights related to credit reports and who to contact if there is a problem.

Consumers have the right to get inaccurate information corrected, completed or deleted on their report.  If a request is made via mail, telephone or in-person, consumers are entitled to a credit report free of charge, including a clear and accurate disclosure of all information in their credit file and the names of persons who have requested a copy of their report in the last six months.  If a consumer cannot resolve an issue after contacting a credit reporting agency, they can contact the FCAA for help.

The Registrar of Credit Reporting may order a correction be made or take other appropriate actions.

For more information, consumers can go to http://fcaa.gov.sk.ca/creditreport2017 or contact consumerprotection@gov.sk.ca.
