National Trucking Week Celebrated - Runs September 4 to 10

Released on September 8, 2016

Weekly Provincial Highway Construction Update

Today, Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit thanked the trucking community for their role in keeping Saskatchewan’s export-based economy moving, as National Trucking Week runs September 4 to 10.

“Trucking plays a critical role in getting Saskatchewan’s landlocked goods to markets across the globe,” Marit said.  “Our government recognizes the key role Saskatchewan truckers play in continuing to grow our province’s economy.   We have made record investments in highway infrastructure to ensure shipping is cost-effective and safe.”

In 2015, Saskatchewan exports were $32.5 billion to more than 150 countries.

“We sincerely appreciate the recent record provincial highways investments that will improve Saskatchewan’s transportation system,” Saskatchewan Trucking Association Executive Director Susan Ewart said.  “As a result, it will become more efficient and easier for professional truck drivers to ship the goods and services that keep the economy moving.”

More than 40 highway projects are ongoing across the Saskatchewan that will improve the provincial transportation system.  To stay safe and protect those working on our highways, people are reminded to slow to 60 km/hr and obey all construction zone signage.  Construction season photos are available at www.highways.gov.sk.ca/2016construction.

Know before you go by checking the Highway Hotline at http://hotline.gov.sk.ca/map/.  It provides details about construction, closures, the status of ferries and barges, along with other activities.  The provincial road information service is also available by calling 306-787-7623 in Regina, 306-933-8333 in Saskatoon and toll-free across Canada at 1-888-335-7623.

The Highway Hotline can also be followed on Twitter @SKGovHwyHotline, which provides information about closures, travel not recommended alerts, tips, and the opening and closing of ferries.  General highway information can be found on the Highway Hotline Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SaskatchewanHighwayHotline.

The Government of Saskatchewan has invested $6.3 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008, improving more than 11,000 kilometres of provincial roads.

National Trucking Week runs across Canada in conjunction with various trucking associations, such as the Saskatchewan Trucking Association.  The week highlights those who work in the trucking community and raises awareness of how to safely share the road with a truck.
