The first phase of construction on the Kelvington integrated facility has concluded, with the opening of the Kelvington and Area hospital on June 1. In addition, renovations to the south wing of the long-term care facility have been completed, allowing residents to move in and enjoy the newly upgraded space.
“Improving the quality of health care services, as well as health care infrastructure, is a priority for our government,” Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “The new Kelvington and Area Hospital is providing high quality acute and primary care services in a new, modern environment.”
“It is rewarding to see the completion of the first phase of this integrated facility, which will deliver a range of health care services all under one roof when it’s completed next year,” Kelvington-Wadena MLA Hugh Nerlien said.
Since 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested more than $200 million toward the replacement of 13 long-term care facilities across the province. Kelvington’s long-term care facility was also approved for expansion to an integrated facility that includes a new hospital and renovations to the existing long-term care facility, Kelvindell Lodge. Once completed, the integrated facility will be equipped with 45 long-term care beds, seven acute care beds, seven multi-purpose clinic rooms and a family room.
“As a Regional Health Authority, we are thrilled to see how excited our staff and the people of Kelvington are to have one phase of this facility open,” Kelsey Trail Regional Health Authority Board Chair Rennie Harper said. “We are looking forward with anticipation to the next phase of renovations, which are well underway. We are all looking forward to this visionary integrated health facility.”
The next phase of the project, renovations to the east wing and the kitchen of Kelvindell Lodge, is currently underway and on track to be completed this fall. The final phase of renovations, which includes the southeast wing of the long-term care facility, is expected to be complete by spring 2017.
The Government of Saskatchewan will contribute $12 million to the $15 million project, which represents 80 per cent of the total shareable costs. Local contributions will cover the remaining 20 per cent.
