Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan Announce New Affordable Housing in Saskatoon

The Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan, along with the City of Saskatoon and the Saskatoon Housing Coalition, announced a new rental housing project in Saskatoon.  The project consists of 20 studio-style units for at-risk individuals who are unable to find or maintain secure housing without support services.

Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with Central Services Minister Jennifer Campeau on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer, and City of Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison made the announcement today.

“Congratulations to everyone involved in the development of Camponi Transitional II,” said Goodale.  “In the coming weeks and months, we look forward to working with Canadians, housing stakeholders and our partners in provinces, territories and municipalities as we restore a constructive role for the federal government in supporting affordable housing.”

“Our government is pleased to support the construction of this project, which will provide 20 units of affordable housing to people with complex needs in Saskatoon,” Campeau said.  “We are proud to help provide safe and secure homes to help Camponi residents embark on a promising future.”

“Safe and secure housing is key to a strong and vibrant community,” Atchison said.  “This 20 unit complex will provide the foundation upon which these individuals can build a successful life in our community.  We are proud to partner with the provincial and federal governments to ensure that everyone in Saskatoon has hope and opportunity.”

“The Board of Directors and staff are very appreciative of the funding support from all levels of government to construct this new apartment building to provide supportive housing services to 20 individuals from our waiting list,” Saskatoon Housing Coalition, Inc. Executive Director Jo-Ann Coleman Pidskalny said.  “Our model of service to house individuals in an affordable independent housing unit, who will be supported by a community mental health worker and other skill development programs, stabilizes the individuals and enables them to maintain a wellness recovery plan.”

This project, Camponi Transitional II, is under construction and will house 20 Saskatoon Housing Coalition clients with complex behaviours, including mental illness and addiction issues.  These individuals will benefit from the Coalition’s intensive supports until they are able to live independently.

Located at 323 Camponi Place in Saskatoon, the project is owned by the Saskatoon Housing Coalition, which has provided supportive housing to individuals with mental illness since 1983.

  • The federal and provincial governments, through CMHC and Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), are jointly contributing $1.9 million through the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (2014-2019) Agreement.
  • In October 2012, the Government of Saskatchewan released the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth: Vision 2020 and Beyond, which sets out the government’s vision for a province of 1.2 million people by 2020.  The plan identifies principles, goals and actions to ensure Saskatchewan is capturing the opportunities and meeting the challenges of a growing province.  Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested almost $700 million to develop and repair more than 14,600 homes around the province.
  • In addition, the City of Saskatoon is providing $277,000 to support the project.
