Today, the Government of Saskatchewan proclaimed February 28 to March 5, 2016, as Agriculture Literacy Week in Saskatchewan.“This week presents an opportunity to connect the agriculture industry with young consumers and ensure they understand modern food production,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said. “As an industry, it is important to provide the public with information on how we produce an abundance of healthy, nutritious food in a sustainable way.”
“This is a great way for students to learn about how important agriculture is to our province,” Education Minister Don Morgan said. “Producers will be welcomed into classrooms and students will be taking part in activities that bring attention to the impact our agriculture industry has across our province and around the world.”
Agriculture Literacy Week brings producers and people who work in agriculture into Saskatchewan’s classrooms to share their personal experiences in the industry. Their visits are supplemented by books and videos provided by Agriculture in the Classroom.
“Agriculture is an amazing story of challenges, opportunities, perseverance, and success,” Agriculture in the Classroom Executive Director Sara Shymko said. “Agriculture Literacy Week activities foster a deeper connection to agriculture and food through the sharing of personal agriculture experiences.”
This year, participating classrooms will enjoy a presentation showcasing the diversity of products Saskatchewan farmers grow as well as a book reading by a representative of the agriculture industry. Agriculture Literacy Week will benefit more than 3,300 students in 130 classrooms across Saskatchewan this year.
