The Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) is pleased to announce Catherine Hana as the recipient of the 2016 Maureen Woods Education Bursary.The $5,000 bursary is funded by the Saskatchewan Provincial Library and Literacy Office. The bursary was established to promote the continued growth of professional librarianship in the province of Saskatchewan.
“I’d like to congratulate Catherine Hana as the successful recipient of this bursary,” Education Minister Don Morgan said. “As a government, we are glad to continue to make funding opportunities available to help people achieve their educational dreams. I am happy that this funding has helped Catherine to pursue her academic and career goals.”
“Catherine impressed committee members with her previous library work experience in a variety of settings and her solid academic record,” Maureen Woods Education Bursary Committee Chair Brad Doerksen said. “We also took note of her significant past contributions to the Manitoba Association of Library Technicians and look forward to the contributions she will make to the Saskatchewan library community.”
Hana, who was born in Winnipeg and raised in Brandon, has worked as a library technician for the past 17 years in many different positions and in a variety of organizations. She has developed a broad skills set supported by the varied experiences and strong connections in the library community and has just completed her Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) at Western University. Hana has presented at the Manitoba Library Association conference and is a past President of Manitoba Association of Library Technicians.
“Pursuing an MLIS after 17 years of working as a library technician was challenging,” Hana said. “I truly appreciate your financial support during this period of transition. More than that, I appreciate the honour of being chosen as this year’s recipient.”
Hana has accepted a position at the Qu’Appelle Health Science Library. She is committed to working within the Saskatchewan library community and taking on a role in the Saskatchewan Library Association.
“I am committed to the library field and excited to have finally reached my long-term goal of becoming a librarian,” Hana said. “I’m excited to be starting my career at the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Sciences Library, and look forward to becoming an active member of the Saskatchewan library community.”
The bursary is administered annually by the SLA. It is open to all students enrolled in or accepted in an American Library Association accredited graduate degree program at the time of the award in library and information science or equivalent. Applicants must be willing to take up residence and employment in Saskatchewan for a period of at least one year following completion of their MLIS program.
