Province Celebrates Saskatchewan Habitat Day

Released on May 1, 2015

In recognition of Habitat for Humanity and their many partner families and volunteers in Saskatchewan, Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer has proclaimed May 1, 2015 as Saskatchewan Habitat Day.  Families who have achieved Habitat homes joined Habitat representatives at a barbecue event held in Regina for a day of celebration.

“This day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Habitat for Humanity as we work together to keep Saskatchewan strong,” Regina Walsh Acres MLA Warren Steinley said on behalf of Minister Harpauer.  “Our government is proud to partner with Habitat to provide opportunities for families to own a home of their own.  Since March 2009, we have committed $7.85 million to help achieve this goal, and we are honoured to help Saskatchewan families realize their dreams.”

“It is an honour to recognize today as Saskatchewan Habitat Day as declared by the Government of Saskatchewan,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Kelly Holmes-Binns said.  “Habitat affiliates throughout Saskatchewan are able to help an increasing number of hard-working, low-income families with continued support of the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.  Together, with all our partners, we are making a difference in the lives of Regina families who are truly grateful.”

The province’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity totals $7.85 million since March 2009.

This total includes $0.60 million from the province’s Summit Action Fund.  This funding has supported builds in 12 communities across the province including Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.

Saskatchewan Housing Corporation now provides $65,000 per home in funding.  This is up from the $50,000 per home which was provided prior to March 2014.

Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 partnering hours to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes.  This assists in the development of the Habitat for Humanity community and their neighbourhood.
