Saskatchewan to Restrict Tanning Bed Use By Minors

Released on March 30, 2015

Saskatchewan plans to develop regulations that will prohibit the use of indoor tanning beds by youth under 18 years of age.

The regulations are expected to be finalized in time for implementation in summer 2015.

“Our government’s goal is to protect the health of Saskatchewan residents,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan said.  “Our young people are particularly vulnerable to the effects of indoor tanning, and this is one way we can help them lower their risk of melanoma.”

Duncan stated that the province has learned much by carefully monitoring developments on the issue across the country, and that Saskatchewan’s regulations will be crafted to take other jurisdictions’ experiences into consideration.

“We have made every effort to be thoughtful about this issue, to gather as much information as possible, and to be aware of different perspectives before proceeding,” Duncan said.

The province will continue to support public education efforts aimed at raising awareness of the risks of indoor tanning, and encouraging people to make healthy lifestyle choices.

The regulatory development process will include opportunities for consultation with interested stakeholders.
