Be Part of Regina's First Ever Living Flag

Released on June 29, 2015

The Provincial Capital Commission (PCC) invites members of the public to participate in a special event on Canada Day—Regina’s first living flag.  Five hundred participants will form the flag on the west lawn of the Legislative Building, starting at 1 p.m.

“2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag, so this year’s Canada Day celebrations are extra special,” Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Mark Docherty said.  “The living flag is an exciting new initiative.  I can’t wait to see Regina’s residents and visitors join together to create this unifying symbol.”

The first 500 individuals to come down to the Legislative Building grounds to form the living flag will be provided with a complimentary red or white t-shirt and a free cupcake.  Once everyone is in place, an aerial photograph will be taken of the living flag and shared on partner websites and social media pages.  The PCC planned this initiative in partnership with Tourism Saskatchewan, Tourism Regina, the Wascana Centre Authority and Regina’s Canada Day Committee.

“We are thrilled to co-ordinate Regina’s first ever living flag,” Provincial Capital Commission Director of Operations Gwen Jacobson said.  “Our hope is that it will become a popular annual event and gain momentum leading up to Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017.”

The Canada Day opening ceremonies kick off at noon with a 21 gun salute, followed by greetings from local dignitaries.  The ceremonies take place on the Main Stage across from the Legislative Building.  Throughout the day, Wascana Park visitors can watch a variety of entertaining events and performances or just relax.
