Moose Jaw Family are Homeowners with Support from Province and Habitat for Humanity

Released on June 26, 2015

A Habitat for Humanity partner family in Moose Jaw can plan for the future, beginning with a home to call their own.  Keys were presented at a special ceremony held at 517 Home Street West.  The project received $65,000 in funding from the province through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), and is also supported in part by Mosaic Potash Corporation and the City of Moose Jaw.

“Making sure families can obtain stable, secure and affordable housing is a top priority for our government, which has proudly supported Habitat for Humanity by providing funding approval to build 107 homes in 12 communities across the province,” Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Greg Lawrence said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer.  “We rely on strong partnerships to support our affordable housing goals and keep Saskatchewan strong.  Habitat for Humanity and its partners and volunteers are to be congratulated for strengthening the community of Moose Jaw, and bringing homeownership to another Saskatchewan family in need of a home.”

“The need for affordable housing is greater than ever and support from the community is key to providing low-income, hard-working families with the opportunity for homeownership,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Kelly Holmes-Binns said.  “This is the fifth home completed in Moose Jaw, and it couldn’t have been done without the support of our partners.  The tremendous support we receive from the Provincial Government through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, private companies, and individuals allows us to continue helping families break the cycle of poverty trough homeownership.”

The Habitat for Humanity project consists of a three-bedroom, single family bi-level home.  The house is 746 square feet or 70 square metres on the upper floor and 720 square feet or 67 square metres across the finished lower floor.

Since March 2009, the province’s overall commitment to Habitat totals $7.85 million and includes the January 2013 approval of $600,000 from the province’s Summit Action Fund.  This funding supports builds in 12 communities across the province including Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.

The province now provides $65,000 per home in funding for homes starting construction.  This is up from the $50,000 per home which was provided prior to March 2014.  Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals.  Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
