Rosetown Company Charged and Fined for Environmental Violations

Released on July 28, 2015

A Saskatchewan company pleaded guilty to five counts under The Hazardous Substances and Waste Dangerous Goods Regulations in Rosetown Provincial Court on July 14, 2015. The company was subsequently fined a total of $6,180.

Conservation officers and environmental project officers with the Ministry of Environment investigated after a TIP call on March 23, 2015 about improper storage of hazardous substances at a facility in Rosetown.  Over the course of the investigation, officers found that a number of storage and documentation requirements were not being adhered to.

“It’s essential that companies working with hazardous materials implement and follow all environmental regulations,” Ministry of Environment Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Branch Wes Kotyk said.  “These regulations are in place to protect the environment and ensure the health and safety of staff, local first responders and the general public.”

Solvent Buddy (Saskatchewan) Inc. of Rosetown was fined $4,780 for:
  • Failing to maintain required documents and inventory records of hazardous substances and waste dangerous goods stored at the facility;
  •  Failing to clearly mark or label hazardous substances and waste dangerous goods that were stored at the facility; and
  •  Failing to provide the local fire department with a list and inventory of hazardous substances and waste dangerous goods.
An additional fine of $1,400 was handed down for one charge of failure to provide the local fire department and emergency measures organization with a copy of an emergency response contingency plan.

If you suspect wildlife, fisheries, forestry or environmental violations, please call your local Ministry of Environment office, Saskatchewan’s toll-free Turn In Poachers (TIP) line at 1-800-667-7561 or #5555 for SaskTel cell phone subscribers, or report a violation online at www.saskatchewan.ca/conservation.  Callers may be eligible for cash rewards from the SaskTip Reward Program.
