Regina Correctional Centre Staff and Inmates Give the Gift of Christmas

For the fifth consecutive year, Regina Correctional Centre’s Wellness Committee has collected donations for hampers and presents to fill the Christmas celebrations of local families in need.  Food hampers and gifts will go to 15 families requiring assistance to help with the holidays.

Funds to purchase the gifts and food in the hampers are raised through fundraisers, and staff and inmate donations at the Regina Correctional Centre (RCC).  Each family’s hamper includes a big turkey supper with all the trimmings, and a present for each child.

This year the RCC Wellness Committee is happy to say the generous donations enabled them to wrap gifts for 54 children to open on Christmas day.

“We are pleased with the generosity shown by the Regina Correctional Centre,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said.  “The generous donations demonstrate the giving spirit that encapsulates the holiday season.”

“We really enjoy the opportunity to come together and have a positive impact on the Christmas celebrations of local families,” RCC Correctional Worker Jenna Hansen said.  “Giving is the true spirit of Christmas and it really gets everyone in a happy Christmas mood when we begin collecting donations every year.”

In addition to the hampers and presents, RCC staff also collected clothing donations for Sacred Heart School.  The collection was for much-needed items such as toques, runners, mittens, books, and winter coats.  One shipment of items has been delivered already this winter, with another to be provided in the new year.  The hampers of holiday food and gifts are delivered by RCC Wellness Committee members to each family’s house in preparation of Christmas celebrations.
