Deputy Premier Extends Welcome to Ukrainian President

Released on September 17, 2014

Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz welcomes the visit of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who arrived in Ottawa today to meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.  President Poroshenko will also address Parliament before heading to Washington D.C., where he is scheduled to address Congress.

“Our province is certainly pleased to welcome President Poroshenko on his first official trip to Canada,” Krawetz said.  “His visit is an important opportunity to reaffirm the support of Canada and Saskatchewan, to Ukraine.  Saskatchewan stands firmly with the efforts of the federal government to help Ukraine in this time of crisis.”

Previously, Saskatchewan announced $60,000 dollars in humanitarian aid for Ukraine.  In the spring session, Krawetz introduced a motion of support for Ukraine that was passed unanimously by the Legislature.

“Generations of Ukrainian immigrants have helped build our province and today, around 13 per cent of Saskatchewan people have roots in Ukraine,” Krawetz said.  “We care deeply about Ukraine’s efforts to achieve self determination and the freedom of their people.”

Krawetz looks forward to continuing work with the Saskatchewan Ukrainian community and the federal government, in order to provide long-term support to the people of Ukraine.
