Corrections and Policing through the Ministry of Justice provides annual funding for 125 police officers as part of the Municipal Police Grant. For 2014-15, the funding amount is $15.4 million.“These dedicated officers are involved in a variety of targeted police initiatives across our province,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said. “By collaborating on shared priorities with our policing partners, we are keeping Saskatchewan communities safe.”
The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU), which is funded through the Municipal Police Grant, had a recent success in their efforts to investigate and dismantle high level, organized crime. Earlier this month, the CFSEU, along with other police agencies, was involved in a major takedown of a group of people in the Regina area believed to be trafficking cocaine and marijuana.
In 2012-13, there were 37 investigations resulting in 54 arrests and 126 criminal charges laid. By mid-year 2013-14, the CFSEU had seized 1.6kg of cocaine, 135kg of cannabis, $71,388 cash and nine vehicles.
“The CFSEU appreciates the annual funding received from the Ministry of Justice through the Municipal Police Grant program,” Officer in Charge of CFSEU Inspector Dave Haye said. “The funding helps the CFSEU to investigate and expose organized crime by ensuring that a sufficient number of officers are available for this unit.”
Other examples of programs with provincially funded officers include: the Missing Persons Task Force, Internet Child Exploitation, Community Mobilization, the Serious and Habitual Offender Comprehensive Action Program and the recently announced Dedicated Traffic Safety Enforcement Units in central and southeast Saskatchewan.
