Two Ceremonies Bring Homeownership to Two Prince Albert Families

Released on November 14, 2014

A Habitat for Humanity partner family in Prince Albert is enjoying an improved quality of life after receiving keys and title to their new home located at 2000 – 13th Street West.  The Government of Saskatchewan, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, provided $50,000 in financial assistance to help make the home a reality.  This home is the first to have been constructed for Habitat through a partnership with CORCAN, a special operating agency of Correctional Service Canada.

Sod was also turned to officially begin the construction of an additional Habitat for Humanity home located at 1201 – 18th Street West.  The province is contributing $65,000 in funding toward the project, which is also being constructed by CORCAN.  Additional financial assistance is being provided by Conexus Credit Union.

“Our government is proud to help provide stability for two more Habitat partner families through housing that is safe and affordable,” Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer.  “Keeping Saskatchewan strong is a goal that we all share, and that includes helping families access housing that meets their needs so they can take full advantage of other opportunities that our great province offers.”

‘We are honoured to provide two families with an affordable home,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert Vice President Morris Sawchuk said.  “They are a valuable addition to the Habitat for Humanity family, and we appreciate the efforts of all our partners to help make these homes a reality.”

In the 2014-15 Budget, the province committed a further $750,000 delivered through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation to help build an additional 12 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout Saskatchewan.  This brings the government’s commitment to Habitat for Humanity to a total of $7.85 million since March 2009.  This total includes $600,000 from the Province’s Summit Action Fund.

This funding supports builds in 12 communities across the province including Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.

Saskatchewan Housing Corporation now provides $65,000 per home in funding for homes starting construction.  This is up from the $50,000 per home which was provided up to March 2014.

Habitat is one of the few organizations whose distinct delivery model continues to provide viable homeownership opportunities for low- to moderate-income families.  Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 partnering hours to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable training and preparation sessions.
