Empire Foundations Inc. of Saskatoon pleaded guilty to two counts under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $9,800 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on May 20, 2014.The company pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 263 of the regulations (failure to ensure that a worker present in a trench more than 1.2 metres deep is protected from cave-ins or sliding material) and was fined $6,000 with a $2,400 surcharge; and
- contravening section 17 of the regulations (failure to ensure that all work at a place of employment was sufficiently and competently supervised) and was fined $1,000 with a $400 surcharge.
The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety recommends prosecutions where individuals or companies refuse to comply with the provisions of legislation or where significant risk of injury to workers is present as a result of non-compliance.
