Saskatoon Construction Company Fined For Failure to Protect Worker

Baschuk Construction Ltd. of Saskatoon pleaded guilty to two counts under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $14,000 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on April 2, 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening section 137 of the regulations (failure to provide an effective safeguard where a worker may contact a dangerous moving part of a machine) and was fined $5,000 with a $2,000 surcharge; and 
  • contravening section 17 of the regulations (failure to ensure that all work at a place of employment was sufficiently and competently supervised) and was fined $5,000 with a $2,000 surcharge.
The company was charged after a worker was seriously injured on November 20, 2012.  The worker became entangled in the drive shaft of a conveyor while crushing gravel northeast of Osler.

In the last five years, Occupational Health and Safety has cited nearly 6,400 contraventions in the construction sector.
