Subscribers to the Rural Municipality of Kindersley Rural Water Utility will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to extend a regional water pipeline to supply treated drinking water to rural residents.
Agriculture Minister and Member of Parliament for Battlefords-Lloydminster Gerry Ritz on behalf of Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification and Economy Minister and MLA for Kindersley Bill Boyd on behalf of Government Relations Minister Jim Reiter, were joined by Rural Municipality (RM) of Kindersley Councillor and Water Utility Board Chairman Allan Melnyk to announce a regional water pipeline project, which is conditionally approved pending an environmental review.
“This important infrastructure project is expected to create jobs and stimulate the local economy,” said Ritz. “When complete, this pipeline will service an area that covers more than 900 square kilometres, providing subscribers with a convenient and reliable source of potable water.”
“The Government of Saskatchewan understands how infrastructure investments by multiple levels of government are important to meeting the challenges of growth and improving the quality of life,” Boyd said.
“We currently have 164 subscribers on our Phase 1 pipeline using approximately eight million gallons of potable water annually,” Melnyk said. “This pipeline covers seven of the 10 divisions in the RM. In the past year, a $20 million upgrade to the town’s water treatment plant and twinning 17 kilometres of pipeline increased water volume to accommodate 70 more subscribers on our Phase II project. We are most thankful for today’s funding announcement to complete this Phase II project.”
The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are each investing up to $1.7 million in the project, while the RM will contribute the balance of the total eligible project costs of more than $5 million.
The more than 190 kilometres of main water pipeline will serve an area of more than 900 square kilometres north, south and west of Kindersley. The source of the potable water will be from the Town of Kindersley. Construction is expected to begin in 2014.
Under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund, the Government of Canada has invested in hundreds of important projects across the west with matching contributions from the western provinces. Thousands of Saskatchewan residents are now enjoying the benefits of this significant investment to Canada and Saskatchewan’s public infrastructure. Since 2007, the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have invested in almost 150 projects for a shared total investment of $210 million under BCF-CC.
