WORK RESUMES ON WEST REGINA BYPASS AND OVERPASS

Released on May 22, 2013

Work is set to resume on a major transportation project west of Regina, including the new overpass at Highway 1.

“Our government is moving forward with plans to ensure construction of the West Regina Bypass is in full swing this season,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris said.  “This infrastructure project will support development of the Global Transportation Hub and growth in and around Regina.”

Including previously completed work, the province is investing $113 million in the West Regina Bypass, including a $27 million contribution from the federal government.  Work planned for this year includes completion of the new overpass at Highway 1.  Construction of the bridge, ramps and connecting roadways is expected to be completed this fall.  In addition to the overpass, work also continues on new lanes from Highway 1 to Dewdney Avenue, including work on the overpass over the CP rail lines.  The new lanes are expected to be complete in the fall of 2014.

Drivers are reminded that the speed limit on Highway 1 is reduced to 60 kilometres per hour from 525 metres east to 525 metres west of the intersection.  As work on the overpass will continue over the summer months, lane closures and other traffic restrictions will occur periodically.

In addition to ongoing construction, a functional planning study for the next phase of the West Regina Bypass from Dewdney Avenue to Highway 11 is nearing completion.  The start of construction of this phase, including overpasses at Dewdney Avenue and Highway 11, will depend on future budgets.

The West Regina Bypass is part of the province’s $576 million highways budget for 2013-14.  The budget includes investment in other major projects such as the Estevan Truck Route and passing lanes between Balgonie and Fort Qu’Appelle.
