MELFORT ROOFER FINED FOR OHS VIOLATIONS

Released on August 27, 2013

Cory Luthi, operating as Cory Luthi Construction (CLC), pleaded guilty to two violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 for failure to ensure that workers used a fall protection system at a work area where workers may fall three metres or more, and failure to provide and/or require workers to use appropriate protective headwear.  The company was fined $580 in Melfort Provincial Court on August 20, 2013.

The charges are related to a workplace inspection conducted on August 17, 2011.  An Occupational Health Officer observed three workers on a roof who were not in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996.  Two other charges were withdrawn by the Crown.

Fatalities and injuries in the construction sector continue to be amongst the highest of any industry in Saskatchewan, and falls represent more than 12 per cent of all injuries reported in construction.  From 2008 to 2012, WCB claims in the construction industry included 21 fatalities and more than 5,600 time loss injuries.
