Released on August 7, 2012
The City of Meadow Lake has pleaded guilty to two counts under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act for failures to ensure that workers are protected from cave-ins or sliding materials in a trench and that all work at a place of employment is sufficiently and competently supervised. The city was fined $6,180 in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on July 30, 2012.
The conviction is related to an incident which occurred on September 22, 2010. Two workers were observed in a trench with straight cut sides and water seepage in the bottom. The walls of the excavation site were not in compliance with OHS requirements.
OHS conducts approximately 4,500 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced, and investigates where workers are killed or seriously injured in a work-related incident.
