Saskatchewan Transportation Week Runs June 1 to 7
A provincial railway inspector will be honoured during Saskatchewan Transportation Week, which runs June 1 to 7 and recognizes the dedicated professionals who literally keep the province moving.
Ed Zsombor, a provincial public servant with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure since 1997, will be this year's inductee to the Saskatchewan Transportation Hall of Fame, as he continues his now more than 40-year involvement with the railway sector. Zsombor will be inducted on June 1 at the annual Saskatchewan Transportation Week Awards Banquet, hosted by the Saskatoon Transportation Club.
"It's great to see one of our public servants like Mr. Zsombor recognized by his peers for his dedication and his work within this field," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. "I also want to recognize everyone in the various aspects of the transportation sector who each and every day move the goods, people and services to improve our quality of life and foster our export-based economy."
Zsombor's ongoing career with the Government of Saskatchewan has focused on the regulation, safety and growth of the provincially-regulated shortline railway sector, which now sees 11 such railways that can operate on about 1,900 km of track. Zsombor's Saskatchewan shortline experience was also sought in Australia in 2007 when he spoke at a symposium and to the Government of Australia.
"It's very humbling to be honoured for the work I love to do each and every day to try to make Saskatchewan a better place," Zsombor said. "All I can do is thank my employer for the opportunities presented and, most importantly, my wife who has been so supportive."
The Saskatchewan Transportation Hall of Fame at the Western Development Museum (History of Transportation) in Moose Jaw was established by the Saskatoon and Regina Transportation Clubs in 1989. It can be found online at http://www.saskatoontransportationclub.ca/index.htm.
"Mr. Zsombor has made outstanding contributions that have brought about positive developments of significant and lasting benefits to transportation and distribution in our province," Saskatchewan Transportation Hall of Fame Chairman John Kimpinski said. "Congratulations on your success."
Zsombor's career has also seen him work for Canadian Pacific Railway, the City of Regina and as a rail transportation consultant.
The Saskatchewan Transportation Hall of Fame inducts one new member annually. Zsombor will be the 25th inductee.
