Construction will begin today to restore access to the Weldon Ferry for motorists and shippers who rely on this South Saskatchewan River crossing off Highway 302, east of Prince Albert.
"The Highway 302 access to the Weldon Ferry had to be closed for safety reasons, due to an active landslide in the area which was caused by heavy moisture," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. "With harvest looming, local producers are anxious for that access to be restored, and we've found a solution that allows us to do just that."
"A safe and practical approach to this problem has been reached in consultation with the ferry users themselves," said Batoche MLA Delbert Kirsch. "I know many motorists in the area, myself included, will be happy to see the ferry up and running again."
The active landslide is on the north bank of the river for a length of .5 km. This has impacted 75 m of the highway, which has slumped down and shifted horizontally about 30 cm. To restore access a single lane detour will be constructed in the north ditch around the slide. The lane will be 75 m long, 6 m wide and 1 m high. In order to construct the lane, a geotextile fabric will be laid over the natural soil and fill will be placed on top to minimize disturbance to the existing plants and natural soil. Proper drainage will be put in place to ensure no further water impacts the slide area.
This area will be heavily signed, and traffic will be limited to light vehicles, farm equipment and tandem trucks at a speed limit of 25 km per hour. No semi-trailers or multi-trailer configurations will be allowed on the new lane. Glow post delineators will be installed along both sides of the lane to improve safety at this location. The area will be heavily monitored by ministry staff for any further landslide activity.
The cost to install the temporary detour is estimated at $25,000. Construction should be complete prior to the Labour Day long weekend, pending weather and contractor progress.
