WEEKLY PROVINCIAL HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Released on September 16, 2010

Motorists are advised to be aware of ongoing and upcoming provincial highway construction projects during their Saskatchewan travels to help plan safe and efficient routes to their destinations.

"It's always important to be cautious and alert when approaching any road construction and obey all flag persons and slow to 60 km/hr when passing highway workers and equipment," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. "We appreciate the inconvenience construction may cause while projects are at various stages, but please keep in mind our highways will be better for everyone when work is completed."

New activity expected to be underway includes a bridge replacement on Highway 13 over Battle Creek east of Consul, a culvert replacement on Highway 24 near Spiritwood, along with bridge improvements on Highway 905 (Athabasca Seasonal Road) south of Stony Rapids. For more details and a list of other long-term projects in various stages of construction or progress, please see the attached backgrounder.

Motorists are also advised to slow to 60 km/hr east of Regina near White City as nearby 24-hour-a-day pipeline work will mean the temporary closure of the eastbound passing (left) lane of Highway 1 starting Monday, Sept. 20. This is expected to reduce that direction of travel to one lane for the remainder of the week and potentially the following week, depending on weather and progress. Motorists may also have to slow down in the westbound lanes.

For emergency road closures due to severe weather, flooding or forest fires, along with other maintenance activities, motorists can also check the Highway Hotline.

Highway Hotline information is available via telephone, the Internet or wireless device as follows: Regina and area at 306-787-7623; Saskatoon and area at 306-933-8333; on the SaskTel cellular network at *ROAD; toll-free across Canada at 1-888-335-7623; at http://roadinfo.telenium.ca/mobile.html; and at http://www.highways.gov.sk.ca/road-conditions/.
