The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure is ready to clear Saskatchewan highways of ice and snow this winter - even if regular snow plow operators fall ill due to increased flu activity.
"In the event of increased flu activity or other circumstances that could impact our regular staffing levels, the additional staff will be ready to help take on the ice and snow removal work that is part of our winter maintenance program," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. "Our Ministry's business continuity plan includes having access to additional staff. It also means a plan to redeploy drivers and snow plow trucks to areas of the province in greatest need."
The ministry has a regular contingent of 430 snow plow operators, but can draw upon 122 additional staff, if needed.
Snow plows are on the road before, during and after storms and available 24-hours a day, seven-days a week. There are more than 300 trucks in 85 winter maintenance sections throughout the province, working to clear snow and ice using a priority system. For more information on this system see attached backgrounder.
"Blading snow off the road can create a mini blizzard or ‘Snow Zone' around the snow plow truck, especially in windy conditions," Reiter said. "Slow down and proceed with caution when approaching a snow plow or when there is a decrease in visibility, and only pass the plow if the passing lane is completely clear."
New legislation passed in the spring of 2009 also requires drivers to slow to 60 km/h when passing a snow plow either stopped on the side of the road or in operation with warning lights flashing. It is also important to know that snow plows can operate at speeds as slow as 30 km/h when plowing snow and spreading salt and sand.
Snow Zone information will be available online at www.highways.gov.sk.ca.
