PROVINCE RELEASES SECOND PHASE OF 2008 HIGHWAY TENDERS

Released on January 23, 2008

A total of $29.8 million worth of highway construction projects have been released as part of Phase 2 of Saskatchewan Highways and Infrastructure's 2007-08 Tender Release.

This follows the Phase 1 Tender Release in December, 2007 which included $63.3 million worth of projects, for a total of $93.1 million worth of projects up for bid to the road-building industry.

Among the Phase 2 projects slated for 2008 is the resurfacing of a total of 102 km of Highways 1, 11 and 16 on the National Highway System.

"We want people and goods to flow seamlessly and safely on our national highway system, which is arguably the most economically important highway network in our province," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Wayne Elhard said. "That means we have to invest in the maintenance of the existing lanes, in addition to twinning new lanes."

Projects under the Phase 2 Tender Release include: resurfacing on two sections of Highway 1 from the Manitoba border to Moosomin (old lanes) and east and west of the Junction of Highway 21 near Maple Creek; resurfacing sections of Highway 16 from Maymont to East of Brada; and resurfacing Highway 11 north of Bethune.

In addition, a micro-surfacing treatment will be used to eliminate rutting, cracking, and surface faults and restore a smooth black asphalt finish to 600 km of highways throughout the province, and in northern Saskatchewan a seal coat treatment will be used to improve and prolong the life of 100 km of highways.

"We're moving quickly to secure our contractors and materials for the upcoming construction season in what we know to be a very competitive market," Elhard said. "At the same time we have an eye to the future, securing our long-term prosperity with an economic impact assessment of all provincial highways so we can establish our five-year rolling plan for highway construction."

The final Phase 3 slate of projects will be released in conjunction with the provincial budget.
