PREVENTION AND SUPPORT GRANTS AWARDED

Released on December 1, 1999

Programs that help families at risk received some financial help from the

government today.

Three community-based projects to help children in the Yorkton area will get

$87,000 through the Saskatchewan Action Plan for Children s Prevention and

Support Grant Program.

The money will go to the Sturgis/Preeceville Family resource centre; the

Kamsack Family Resource centre; and Yorkton's Pre-school Playland Program.

Saskatchewan Social Services Minister Harry Van Mulligen today announced 43

projects across the province will share part of the $1.4 million available to

communities through the program. Since 1994-95, the Prevention and Support

Grant Program has contributed $7 million to more than 450 locally-designed and

operated projects.

Prevention and Support Grants are targeted to community projects that help

vulnerable children and their families, Van Mulligen added.

The Women s Secretariat and the departments of Education, Health, Justice,

Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs, Municipal Affairs, Culture and

Housing, Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training, Social Services, and

Northern Affairs are all involved in Saskatchewan s Action Plan for Children.
