Services Provided by Livestock and Feed Extension Specialists

Tessa Thomas, PAg, Livestock and Feed Extension Specialist, Tisdale

April 2026

Have you ever had a question about your farm and didn’t know who to ask or where to look for the answer? The Ministry of Agriculture’s extension specialists are here to help you!

There are 10 regional offices throughout the province with a variety of knowledgeable specialists available to provide support. These specialists include rangeland management extension specialists, crops extension specialists, agriculture programs specialists, agri-environmental specialists and livestock and feed extension specialists.

In addition to hosting demos, projects and extension events, livestock and feed extension specialists answer producer inquiries. The bulk of these are related to beef cattle production, but they also provide support for sheep, goat, bison and other livestock producers. Part of the role of these specialists includes helping producers test their livestock water and feed and interpret results.

Most regional offices are equipped with a conductivity metre which is used to screen the water samples when producers bring them to the office. If the conductivity is low, the producer will be notified and if it is high, it will be sent on to the Roy Romanow Provincial Lab in Regina for quality analysis. Once the results come in, the specialist will help interpret the results for the producer.

Livestock and feed extension specialists are also able to support producers interested in having their feed tested. Forage probes are available at most regional offices for producers to borrow to take samples of their bales — there are also a few silage probes throughout the province that can be used to take samples of silage pits. Specialists will help producers choose the right feed testing package, submit samples to the lab, interpret results and develop a ration catered to the specific needs of their livestock and operation.

If you are curious about resources and how specialists can help you and your operation, stop by one of our regional offices. If you aren’t sure where to find us, call the Agriculture Knowledge Centre at 1-866-457-2377 and they can help direct you.
