How to Buy a Licence

Licences are available:

• Through your HAL account any time;
• At any Saskatchewan hunting licence issuer;
• At a Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment or select provincial park office; or
• Order by phone using a credit card at 1-855-848-4773 (8 a.m. to 9 p.m.). Please allow 10 business days for delivery.

Licence purchases can be made by accessing your existing account using your HAL identification number of your previously registered secondary identification number. Do not create a second account. For assistance with your account, call 1-855-848-4773 between 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

It is a violation to:

• Use more than one HAL ID number for the purpose of obtaining or applying for a licence.
• Hold or apply for a licence while suspended. Hold a regular and a draw big game draw licence for the same species.
• Hold two licences of the same licence type in any one year.
• Use or carry another person's big game licence, seal or certificate while hunting.

Remember – your HAL ID is a one-time, permanent and personal number.

Eligibility

Whether you are an in-province, out-of-province or out-of-country hunter, there is important residency and licence information that you will need to know before buying a licence.

The hunting licences available for purchase are based on residency. Please review the residency definitions listed below prior to purchasing your licence to avoid any inconvenience.

Saskatchewan resident: A person who is a Canadian resident whose principal residence is in Saskatchewan, has lived in the province for three months immediately prior to applying for a licence and possesses a valid Saskatchewan Health Services card (including RCMP members). This includes a person who is a regular member of the Canadian Armed Forces that is stationed and residing in the province or who was a Saskatchewan resident when recruited or deployed from the province.

Canadian resident: A person who has their principal residence in Canada and who is a Canadian citizen or who has resided in Canada for 12 months immediately preceding the date of applying for or purchasing a licence.

Non-resident: A person who is not a Saskatchewan or Canadian resident.

Note: All Saskatchewan residents must ensure their name is recorded exactly as it appears on their valid Health Services Card when creating a HAL account. Health services numbers will not be recorded. Members of the Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP can use their regimental numbers when establishing their HAL account.

Firearm Safety/Hunter Education Training

People born after January 1, 1971, must hold a certificate from a recognized firearm safety/hunter education course in order to apply for and hold a Saskatchewan game or fur licence. All first-time purchasers of hunting or trapping licences will be asked to confirm that they hold a firearm safety/hunter education certificate. Conservation officers may request proof of training.

Contact the Saskatchewan Association of Firearm Education (SAFE) to check your status or to obtain documentation of successful completion at 306-352-6730 or saskhuntered.ca.

If you have received your training outside of Canada or the United States, contact the SAFE or a ministry office to confirm that the training is recognized in Saskatchewan.

Youth Hunting Requirements

A youth game bird licence and a youth white-tailed deer licence are available to youth 12 to 18 years of age. Youth wishing to hunt waterfowl must purchase a federal migratory game bird permit, except during Waterfowler Heritage Days.

While hunting, youth aged 12 to 15 must be under the direct supervision of an adult who is at least 18 years of age. Subject to federal firearms legislation, youths aged 16 to 17 may hunt unsupervised*.

Note: Firearm safety/hunter education training differs from the Canadian Firearms Safety Course. The federally sponsored Canadian Firearms Safety Course allows successful students to apply for a Possession and Acquisition licence, which authorizes a person to possess or purchase a rifle or shotgun and purchase ammunition. The Canadian Firearms Safety Course does not authorize a person to purchase a Saskatchewan hunting or trapping licence.

Federal firearms legislation states:

• Any person who does not hold a federal Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) or federal Minors' Permit must be under the supervision of someone who holds a PAL; and
• A youth hunter 16 years of age or older can hunt without supervision if that individual possesses a federal Minors' Permit.

Youths aged 12 to 15 must have a parent or guardian complete the consent portion of the Saskatchewan hunting licence. Each subsequent licence purchase or reprint will require completion of the consent section.

A free youth fur licence is also available with the youth game licence or as a stand-alone licence with the purchase of a Wildlife Habitat Certificate. Youth fur licences are only available at Ministry of Environment field offices. First-time trappers must successfully complete a recognized humane trapper education course or pass an equivalency test available from Ministry of Environment offices.
