Application and Selection Process

Custody Service Employees

Custody Service Employees (CSE) provide care, custody and case management services for the control and supervision of offenders in a facility setting. CSEs assist offenders in coping with incarceration as they promote safe communities by strengthening offenders' abilities to live in and contribute to their communities upon release.

The role of a CSE is thought to be one of the most challenging and fulfilling. There are many varied employment opportunities within Saskatchewan Corrections.

Stage 1: Application

Your application package must include:

  • A cover letter;
  • Your resumé;
  • A valid First Aid CPR AED (with at least one year remaining before expiry); and
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or equivalent that allows you to transport offenders).

Stage 2: Screening

Your application package will be reviewed and if you possess the competencies, including first aid/CPR/AED certification and a valid Class 5 driver's licence, your application will proceed to stage three. If you do not possess the competencies required, your application will not be considered further and you will not be contacted.

Stage 3: Evaluations and Assessments

Effective January 15, 2024, the COPAT requirement for employment will be replaced by a pre-employment physical assessment completed by a licensed medical practitioner. A request form will be provided to the applicant during the recruitment process.

 

Applicants should be in excellent physical condition prior to submitting their application.

Interview

You will be invited to attend a competency-based interview to further discuss your qualifications and experience. Candidates who are unsuccessful in this stage will no longer be considered at that time.

Names and Contact Information for References

You are required to bring three references from your most recent supervisors and those who can validate the competency stories you tell in your interview. Please ensure you provide current and accurate contact information for each reference. Global references may be contacted.

Criminal Record Check

You will need a criminal record check (CRC) and a vulnerable sector check (VSC) before receiving a conditional offer of employment. Detailed instructions on how to obtain this requirement will be sent to you by Human Resources during the recruitment process if you are successful.

NOTE: Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment will also be required to provide fingerprints. This process is scheduled for all new hires during the first week of Induction Training.

Candidates must be successful in all components of stage three.

Stage 4: Potential Candidate Pool

Successful candidates will be placed in a pool for the facility (or facilities) they expressed interest in. As opportunities become available, candidates will be drawn from the pool.

Stage 5: Conditional Offer of Employment

You will receive a conditional offer of employment and be placed on a list to attend the next scheduled Induction Training Program (ITP).

The offer will be conditional upon:

  • having the required enhanced security clearance; and
  • successfully completing the ITP.

Additional Information

Candidates Previously Employed in a Saskatchewan Correctional Facility

The process for re-hiring individuals who were previously employed in a provincial facility varies depending upon the length of time that has elapsed since they left their position. Generally speaking, any absences of greater than two years will require the completion of the entire recruitment and training process. The requirements for absences of less than two years will be determined through an analysis.

Candidates Currently Employed with Corrections in Another Jurisdiction

Candidates currently employed in a correctional facility in another province or country cannot transfer to a position in Saskatchewan. They must apply through the process outlined above and will be required to satisfy all associated requirements.
