French Teacher Summer Bursary

Eligible individuals in Saskatchewan may apply for a French Teacher Summer Bursary of up to $2,000.

This bursary gives individuals the opportunity to attend a recognized Francophone or bilingual post-secondary educational institution in Canada during the months of July and August at a reduced personal cost. During this time, you will:

• improve your teaching methods; and
• further your knowledge of the French language.

Eligible individuals must:

• be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
• be a resident of Saskatchewan;
• hold a valid teaching certificate;
• be scheduled, in the upcoming school year, to teach French in an Immersion program, teach Core French or Intensive French, or be a coordinator, counsellor, librarian or staff member responsible for the administration of an Immersion program, or Core French or Intensive French courses, in Saskatchewan; and
• be enrolled full-time in one approved course for a minimum of two weeks, between July 1 and August 31, in a Francophone or bilingual post-secondary institution in Canada.

In order to apply you must:

1. Select a course form the Pre-Approved Courses list. If you wish to attend another course at an institution not appearing on the list, that information must be included in the application form. The Ministry of Education's Programs Branch will determine if the course is approved.


2. a. Download the Principal and Director of Education Approval Form.
   b. Send this form to your current principal and have it signed by the principal and the Director of Education in your school division.


3. After you have received your signed Principal and Director of Education Approval Form:
   a. Complete the online application form, below. This must be completed in one sitting. If you exit the website before completing the form, the information will not be saved.
   b. Before submitting the form, you must upload the signed Principal and Director of Education Approval Form on the upload page. If your application is incomplete, this may delay processing.

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act

Information you provide to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education is collected under the authority of section 26(1) of The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) and is managed in accordance with Part 4 of the FOIP Act. The personal information you provide will be used by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education for the purpose of operating the French Teacher Summer Bursary program. The information will be used during the application process to determine the eligibility of the applicants and to carry out internal operations in order to grant successful applicants a bursary.

Your personal information will not be used or disclosed for any other purpose by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education without your consent or unless required to do so by law. Should you wish to have your personal information removed or corrected, or if you have concerns pertaining to the French Teacher Summer Bursary program, please contact the provincial coordinator, at 306-787-6048.

Please note that applications are prioritized based on the following criteria:

• First-time applicants will be prioritized.
• Courses designed to help applicants improve their French language skills will be prioritized over classes taught in French aimed at improving teaching methods.
• Bursaries will be divided equitably among school divisions.
• Bursaries will be divided equitably among the types of French language streams (ex. French Immersion, Core French, Intensive French).
• A longer summer course will be prioritized over a course that meets the minimum duration of two weeks.
• Priority will be given to applicants teaching in the following regions, from highest priority to lowest:
  • Remote regions;
  • Rural regions; and
  • Urban regions.
• Teaching contracts will be prioritized as follows, from highest to lowest:
  • Permanent;
  • Temporary; and
  • Substitute.

Please note: No applicant may receive the bursary more than three times.

• The provincial coordinator will contact you by email to confirm receipt of your application.
• School divisions with multiple applicants will be contacted by the provincial coordinator to provide a prioritized list of candidates to the Programs Branch. These applications will then be reviewed by the Programs Branch.
• You will be advised in writing whether or not your application was approved for a bursary within approximately one month following the deadline.
• Successful applicants will be contacted for more information.
• All applications received after the deadline will be placed on a waiting list, in the order in which they are received, and will be considered only if funds remain in the budget.
• Following the end of the summer course, successful applicants will be required to submit proof of attendance and course-related expenses to the provincial coordinator by email or mail in a timely manner in order to receive the bursary. If the course was completed successfully and all proper documentation has been submitted, a cheque should arrive by mail approximately one month following the submission of all documents.

• Please note that all bursaries are considered to be taxable income.
• The provincial coordinator at the Programs Branch must be advised immediately of any change to your program of study.
• The Programs Branch may withdraw a bursary, reduce the amount of a bursary, or require all or part of a bursary to be reimbursed if any information provided in the application is found to be false or inaccurate, if it receives a report that a student's performance in a course was unsatisfactory, or if the Programs Branch deems such action to be justified for any other reason.
• The French Teacher Summer Bursary program is funded jointly by Canadian Heritage and the Saskatchewan government, and administered in Saskatchewan by the Programs Branch of the Ministry of Education.
