Domestic Adoption

The Domestic Adoption Program is offered through the Ministry of Social Services involving the adoption of a child who is permanently in the care of the Minister of Social Services.

1. Eligibility

To become an adoptive parent, you may be single, married or living common-law, of any ethnicity, with or without children of your own.

You must be:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Reside in Saskatchewan.
  • Willing to participate in Parent Resources for Information, Development and Education (PRIDE) Pre-service Training and the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Culture Component.
  • Willing to participate in the completion of a Mutual Family Assessment with a Ministry Adoption Worker, which includes a Criminal Record and Child Welfare Background Check.

2. How to apply

Please contact The Evermore Centre at 1-866-869-2727 to begin the Domestic Adoption Orientation Program (DAO).

The steps to becoming an adoptive parent include:

  1. Contact The Evermore Centre to complete the Domestic Adoption Orientation Program (DAO).
  2. Attend an intake meeting with a Ministry of Social Services Adoption Worker to complete the application process.
  3. Attend the Parent Resources for Information, Development & Education (PRIDE) Pre-service Training sessions.
  4. If your application is approved, you will then be registered on the provincial adoption waiting list.

The length of time it takes to adopt a child varies. Applicants willing to support older children, sibling groups, or children with complex needs tend to complete the steps required to adopt much sooner.

3. Assisted Adoption Benefits

Financial assistance through the Assisted Adoption Program may be available to families in the Domestic Adoption Program for children that have an identified predisposition to a physical, mental or emotional disability that impacts their health and development.

This program supports children:

  • With a wide range of special needs.
  • Placed as part of a sibling group.
  • Whose family requires additional supports.
  • Who have been adopted by extended family.

Financial assistance available through this program may include:

  • Monthly maintenance.
  • Special needs benefits based on an approved case plan.
  • Supplementary Health Program benefits.

An adoption worker will discuss benefits with the adoptive family once a child has been placed in an adoptive home.

Other Types of Adoption

In Saskatchewan, there are several other types of adoption available besides Domestic Adoption, including: Intercountry Adoption, Independent Adoption, Adult Adoption and Step-parent Adoption.
