Government Expanding Scope Of Pinehouse Inspection

Today, Government Relations Minister Warren Kaeding called for additional steps to be taken into the ongoing inspection of the northern Village of Pinehouse.

“After careful review of Mr. Robertson’s initial report, and discussion with officials from both the ministries of Government Relations and Justice, today I am taking steps to widen the scope of the inspection into the Village of Pinehouse,” Kaeding said.  “I would like to thank Mr. Robertson for all his ongoing work on this matter.”

These steps include:
  • expanding Mr. Neil Robertson’s authority to conduct an official inquiry;
  • appointing Mr. Hasan Akhtar, a public servant of five years, and expert on northern municipal matters, to provide assistance, support and guidance to the local council; and
  • beginning a financial audit of the community.
“This is not a decision that I take lightly,” Kaeding said.  “But one that I believe will help answer some outstanding questions, and more importantly lead to greater stability within the village and the local council, something that the residents of the community deserve.”

In December 2018, Minister Kaeding appointed Mr. Robertson to conduct an inspection of the community.  Mr. Robertson’s initial report was submitted to government earlier in March.  Transitioning from an inspection to an inquiry will grant Mr. Robertson additional powers under The Northern Municipalities Act, 2010 (sections 417 to 422) to explore outstanding questions that were raised within his report.

Following this process, Mr. Robertson’s report will be made available to the public.
