Embracing Winter In Saskatchewan – A Week Of Fun Family Activity

Family Day in Saskatchewan is on February 18, which for many families is just the beginning of a week of school’s-out activities.  There are some great events happening in our province to keep the family busy through the February break.

“From parks, to heritage, to the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, there are all sorts of fun and educational experiences happening in Saskatchewan,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said.  “Whether you are looking for a way to embrace winter activities in our province, or to learn about our history, there is truly something for everyone.”

On February 16 and 17, residents and visitors to the province are welcome to ice fish in any waterbody that has an open sport fishing season, without purchasing a fishing license.  This is a great way to try the sport for the first time, or to get out for the first time this winter.  More information about fishing in Saskatchewan can be found in the Anglers’ Guide, available wherever fishing licenses are sold, or online at www.saskatchewan.ca/fishing.

This is a beautiful time of year to enjoy outdoor activities in provincial parks, starting February 15 with a 3.2 km candlelight ski at Moose Mountain Provincial Park from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. On February 17, from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park will host a morning guided snowshoe hike and an afternoon demonstration on winter shelter building along with horse-drawn wagon rides, tobogganing, hot chocolate and marshmallows.  On February 24, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Douglas Provincial Park will offer sleigh rides, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and a hotdog/marshmallow roast. While construction is still underway at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the facility will be open during family week, with a focus on wild families!  The Paleo Pit will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and there will be a family scavenger hunt taking place throughout the galleries.  From February 19 until February 22, the field station will be open from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. to allow visitors to touch furs, explore skulls and identify tracks. Our province’s rich heritage takes centre stage the week of February 18 to 24.  Heritage Week presents several free activities, including lectures on Saskatchewan archeology at the Regina Public Library on February 19, and on Regina’s four airports at the Artesian on 13th on February 20.  A reception at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church is also open to the public on February 21, hosted by the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation.  Earlier that day, Heritage Saskatchewan and the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport will present their annual Heritage Forum.
