Contributions of Public Works Professionals Recognized

Released on May 18, 2018

Saskatchewan is celebrating the contributions of its public works professionals by declaring May 20- 26, 2018, as Public Works Week.

This year’s theme, “The Power of Public Works,” highlights the enormous and beneficial impact public works has had on our modern civilization.  It is the 58th year that public works officials in Canada have raised awareness of their work and the commitment of their profession to building a better life for everyone across Saskatchewan and Canada.

“It’s important that we all recognize the role of public works in society, and how the profession has been a key contributor to our way of life,” Central Services Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said.  “We all depend on the infrastructure that public works professionals not only design and build, but manage and operate for all of our benefit.”

Public Works Week is organized by the Saskatchewan chapter of the Canadian Public Works Association, which is part of a professional group that includes more than 30,000 members across North America.  Its mission is to not only promote public awareness through education, but to foster the exchange of knowledge and excellence in the profession.

“This year's theme speaks to how vital public works are to improving and sustaining the quality of life for people here at home and around the world,” Saskatchewan Public Works Association President Dale Petrun said.  “Everything from the clean water we drink, to waste disposal, to our crucial transportation systems are dependent on public works and the professionals responsible for their development and operation.”

Celebrated during the third week of May each year, Public Works Week serves not only to acknowledge the contributions and efforts of public works professionals in Saskatchewan, but to inspire a new generation to consider a career in this much-valued profession.
